Automated Inspection: The Accuracy Bottleneck That Software Can Solve
The opportunity
Automated inspection using robot-mounted sensors is one of the fastest-growing applications in industrial robotics. Quality requirements are increasing, inspection volumes are growing, and skilled inspectors are increasingly difficult to hire. Robot-mounted 3D scanners, laser profilers, and inspection probes promise to automate what has been a manual, expertise-dependent process.
The bottleneck is accuracy. A robot can carry a sensor through an inspection routine repeatedly, but if the robot's positioning accuracy isn't sufficient, the measurement quality degrades. Parts are incorrectly accepted or rejected. The automated system produces results that don't correlate with the gold-standard CMM. Trust erodes, and operators revert to manual inspection "just to be sure."
Why this is a software problem
The sensor itself is typically more accurate than the robot carrying it. A structured light scanner may resolve features at ±0.02 mm, but if the robot positions it ±0.5 mm from the intended location, the measurement is spatially referenced to the wrong coordinates. The limiting factor is the robot, not the sensor.
Software-based accuracy improvement — calibration, vibration compensation, and dynamic tracking — addresses the robot side of the equation. It makes the positioning platform as accurate as practical, allowing the sensor's full capability to be utilized.
Market implications
For sensor manufacturers: Robot accuracy limits the achievable measurement quality of your sensor in robot-mounted applications. Software that improves robot accuracy expands the usable performance envelope of your product.
For integrators: Inspection cells that produce trustworthy, CMM-correlated results command higher value and generate fewer warranty claims.
For end users: Automated inspection that can be trusted reduces the need for manual re-inspection and CMM spot-checks, delivering the throughput and cost savings that justified the investment.
